Bystander Intervention for Show-Goers

  • National Arts Centre 1 Elgin Street Ottawa, ON, K1P Canada (map)

In this bystander intervention workshop, you will learn everything you need to know to safely intervene and de-escalate a risky situation: from learning about the risk factors involved in sexual violence at shows and identifying situations that needs your help, to simple non-confrontational strategies on how to intervene. In this interactive workshop, we will also talk about challenging our own implicit biases, such as racism and ableism to better support members of our music community. Finally, we will have an opportunity to work through common scenarios to practice our bystander intervention skills and be ready to use our skills in our day-to-day lives.

About Project SoundCheck:

Project SoundCheck is a sexual harassment and assault prevention initiative. It is a joint creation of the Sexual Assault Network and the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women. We want to bring our festivals, venues, and community together to challenge bystander apathy; the tendency to ignore incidents of sexual harassment and assault in large group situations where people feel less responsibility for others or assume another person will intervene.
